What’s in the Sky for September 2025
September 2025 the brings is the fall equinox, at this time of year the nights get longer in the Northern Hemisphere. We can expect the sun to set earlier and darkness to fall sooner. The summer stars linger longer in the sky and the moon skims the western Horizon. This year most of the brighter planets are in the morning skies. Saturn is really a highlight, as it dominates the central sky, appearing edge on
Evening Sky: In September 2025 the evening starts off with a chance to view the wonders of the Milky Way, starting from Scorpion and Saggitarius and then following it North through Aquilla, then Cygnus and Lyra, and the summer triangle
Saturn: This summer the Rings of Saturn appear edge on, this is an event that happens every 13 to 15 years. This started in March, just as Saturn moved into conjunction with sun. Saturn rises earlier in the evening now, and by late evening it is well placed to look at and enjoy this edge on view of its rings, a rare sight. September 11th: Full Moon will be in Scorpio. There will be a lunar eclipse that will be visible only the Eastern Hemisphere. centered on India and Central Asia.
September 14th: Last Quarter Moon
September 25th: New Moon and Saturn at Opposition
September 29th: First Quarter Moon. The Moon will be low in the sky to the south West in Sagittarius.
